Renewable Energy


Climate change is the recognised driver for a push towards renewable energy. UK legislation such as the Climate Change Act obliges the government to achieve at least 26% carbon emissions reduction by 2020 from a 1990 baseline. The Energy Act encourages industrial investment in carbon capture and the Renewables Obligation to more rapidly deploy renewable energy.

Bristol and the South West have many firsts in renewable technology from the first deployment of tidal stream turbines to the first commercial wind farms, and energy from waste plants using pyrolysis and gasification. The city also borders the Severn estuary, with the second highest tidal range in the world which is currently under examination for the potential of its tidal power resource to be harnessed for renewable energy. The Bristol office of Parsons Brinckerhoff is currently involved in a study assessing the potential technologies.

Action is also underway from Bristol City Council with the BETS initiative along with local community projects such as the Community Sustainable Energy Programme. All encourage the development and deployment of new technologies and services in the region and present growing opportunities for business.

Based in Bristol, Marine Current Turbines (MCT) is the world leader and first mover in marine current and tidal stream energy. MCT installed the world’s first offshore tidal turbine near Lynmouth off the coast of Devon in May 2003 and completed installation and commissioning of the world’s first commercial scale tidal turbine, the 1.2 MW SeaGen, in Strangford Narrows in Northern Ireland in 2008.
