Chinese Sustainable Development mission heading for the UK
Sino-Bridge International is a subsidiary of a parent company based in Beijing. Since 1997, SBI has been designated by the Chinese central and local governments as a facilitator for hundreds of training missions to visit the UK for exchanges. Sino-Bridge has successfully facilitated mutually beneficial exchanges between Chinese government departments and UK government agencies as well as private companies.

From October 1 to October 20, a delegation organised by the Xinjiang Construction Group Co., Ltd, PRC the largest state owned enterprise in Xinjiang province) is here in the UK for a training mission on on sustainable building design, management, and monitor; new materials used in sustainable buildings; the BREDEM model; solar power, geothermal power, and other renewable energy used in sustainable buildings.

It is a delegation of 16 people led by Mr Jianguo ZHU, president of the company.

During their mission in the UK, the delegation would like to visit the some sustainable construction companies to learn about best practices and methodologies. The XCG is in charge of most of the construction projects ongoing in Xinjiang. This visit, therefore, can be extremely meaningful for Xijiang's sustainable development.

They would love to have a 1-2 hour round table with some specialists in the above fields.

Green Deal Skills Courses at Norton Radstock College

As a result of the Government's Green Deal, Norton Radstock College has come up with a range of courses and qualifications that are suitable for those working in the construction industry and looking to increase their knowledge and upskill in order to work in the sustainability sector.

Lorna Crouch, marketing manager at Norton Radstock College, said: "With energy saving, and the resulting cost savings, at the forefront of people's minds, it's more important than ever for those working in the construction industry to follow green principles.

It's not all about expensive solutions such as solar PV, but often the little things which all add up. Collectively everything can help to reduce our carbon footprint. By 2020 EU directives require a 20 per cent reduction in carbon use and by 2050 an 80 per cent reduction.

Some of these courses may also be of interest to the DIY enthusiast looking to do their own home improvements too such as water harvesting and sustainable carpentry."

This will be welcome news to many who wish to get involved with the opportunities that the Green Deal will bring, but are not sure how to proceed in gaining the necessary skills.

You can see more information on the courses themselves on this flyer.

Low Carbon South West Chair on Judging Panel for South West Awards

We are delighted to announce that our very own Chair, Alan Bailey, will be representing Low Carbon South West on the judging panel for the inaugural 'Made in the South West Awards' which are to take place this November.

The awards are being held to celebrate the success and innovation that comes out of the South West region, and to recognise the contribution made by thriving local businesses to the prosperity of the area as a whole.

One award that is of particular interest to us of course is the Sustainable Manufacturer Award. This award is for the company that has demonstrated the greatest commitment, through its products and processes, to forging a low carbon manufacturing future for the South West.

Do you feel this describes your company? If so then you can nominate yourself for the award on the Made in the South West website.

You will need to give examples of action taken by your company to reduce pollution and carbon dioxide emissions with measurable impacts, show changes you have made to use resources more efficiently, or to use fewer resources. You will also need to explain your strategy on the environment at a plant level and a company level.

For more information, see the news story here, or visit the Made in the South West Website.
